I am biased toward "mexican" food. Even the best mexican food still isn't really so great. Just different ways to combine flour and cheese and various meats. Sorry if that sounds ignorant.

With that in mind, I still tried out Cancun, the new spot on the corner of NY Ave and Beech. First impressions...this is a BIG restaurant. We arrived at 9:30 on Friday, it was conspicuously empty, but that may be because it quietly launched very recently. Still, this would be a tough place to fill, and I couldn't quite tell if the ownership had visions of it becoming a nightclub in the evenings? There was a sizable bar, and club lighting came on around 12, the music was nightclub-esque throughout the meal. And yet, in the corner of the expansive space, a mechanical bull further confused the restaurants identity, though it got its use from another of the two tables who had apparently had their fill of $10 margaritas.

I digress. The food here was good. We had enchiladas and a combination plate which included a taco and a tostada. All good and fresh. Guacamole appetizer was made tableside and was very good. My only gripe with the food would be that it was rather pricey for mexican fare (about $16/plate), but as I said earlier, its not my favorite cuisine. If you are a fan of this type of food, and want a little more upscale atmosphere than Cabana, check it out. Otherwise, we wait to see what type of place Cancun ends up being. Reviewed by Vin C.
